So how do you identify them?

These components are easy to identify just by the shape of them.  The pinion kind of looks like a bolt that has a flared head on one of the ends.  The pinion actually fits onto the ring which looks like a circle that has crescent shaped teeth.  Most of the time, these parts will look alike but they will have a different ratio as well as a few other differences that are more subtle.  When you want to increase the performance of your rig, changing these out can be one of the simplest ways.

If you are trying to identify these parts by ratio and measurement then you will need to separate them so that you will be able to take their measurements.  Using calipers, get the measurements of both the pinion and the ring.  You will need the diameter of them precise to within a tenth of an inch.  Next, you will need a count of the teeth on both of them.  In order to figure out the ratio, take the number of the teeth that the pinion has and then divide that by the number that the rings has.

Use these measurements to find the sets that match.  The ratio and size between the pinion and the ring are typically unique to a part set and this can be utilized to locate the manufacturer when the manufacturer’s stamped code is no longer readable.

Choosing a ring and pinion
We all know that the holy grail of performance has to do with how many ponies are running under the hood.  We want more…always. 
The thing is, when you get it, why do you waste it?
You might be wondering how it is wasted right now.  In the never ending search for more horsepower, race enthusiasts and muscle car enthusiasts as well as off roaders tend to waste their existing horsepower when they use a ring and pinion set that is improperly sized.  When you have the correct gear set, you will be able to transfer more of the power from your engine to the ground while improving the engine acceleration and/or top end speed – this will depend on the purpose of your rig – and it will also play a large role in the cruising rpm of your rig.

·         What is the style of your gears?  Are they pro gears or performance gears?  If you are looking to be doing more strip. Street or off road driving then you will want performance gears.  They are made from a harder type of steel and as such, they are incredibly more durable than your stock gears.  They are better able to handle those applications that call for more torque.
