Pinions and ring gears are used to make the axles and wheels spin backwards and forwards.  Their most often seen use is in vehicles where they are utilized to enhance the performance of the drive train while also providing more power to each of the wheels.

A set like this will come with a grooved ring that is connected to the axle between the rear wheels of your rig while the grooved pinion will connect to the actual drive shaft.  Any rig that is equipped with 4 Wheel Drive and even some of the older 2 Wheel Drive vehicles will come with these components.  However, when you want to increase the performance of your rig you can always get these sets that have a higher ratio for the gears.

The ring and the pinion work as a team in order to make torque as soon as the driver shifts the power to the drive wheels.  When the drive shaft spins, so does the pinion and then the ring and correspondingly, the wheels will also spin.  When you want more power to go to the wheels and more force to be created with ever spin then you need to get a ring and pinion set that has a higher ratio.  It is important to get them with the correct ratios so that they will work properly.
